West Coast Activities

Paparoa Beach Hideaway is the perfect base for exploring the West Coast Region of New Zealand. Two purpose-built timber holiday houses set in large private grounds. A destination in itself, complete with Cedar hot tub, beach and bush tracks, and outdoor fire pit.

We are perfectly positioned to head North or South to popular towns on either side. Barrytown offers the All nations café and Bar, a great place to meet locals and learn about the areas past and present.  Explore nearby towns such as Punakaiki  (10min), Greymouth (30min), or Westport (50min).

There are many activities to do within the rugged west coast beaches such as canoeing or surfing the local breaks. You can also fish in many spots in the nearby sea or the river.

Great for birdwatching and dark sky observation.

Punakaiki is only a 10-minute drive north of the property. The small community lies on the edge of the Paparoa National Park. It is well-known for the Pancake Rocks, which is at the Dolomite Point south of the main village. This natural wonder features beautiful pancake layering of limestone formed around 30 million years ago. It also has several vertical blowholes where the sea bursts through during high tide. Other activities in the area include canoe adventures, horse trekking, cave rafting and colorful local craft-making.

Punakaiki also has a Cavern you can explore, which has glow worms and stalactites. The Punakaiki Cavern is just a 5-minute walk north of the Pancake Rocks, hidden away on the eastern side of the main road.

Check out the local artisans in the Barrytown area for Jade carving or the world-famous local Barrytown knife maker. If you want a more laid back, relaxed activity, there is the Golden Sands Horse and Wagon tour.  The  West Coast is home to endless beautiful beaches, full of wildlife to explore.

If hiking, tramping or mountain biking is the adventure of choice, the nearby Paparoa National Park has many beautiful tracks you can take on. Aside from the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks track, Truman Track and Pororari River track can be explored within an hour of walking. Longer walks that take half the day or a full day include Cave Creek, Ballroom Overhang, and the Pororari-Punakaiki Loop Track.

We are also close to New Zealand’s newest Great Walk: The Paparoa Track. This 2 to 3-day hiking and 1 to 2-Day mountain biking track follows the Paparoa Ranges on to the Wild West Coast. The track starts at the Smoke-ho car park near Black Ball and ends at the Pororari River car park.
